PARKS VICTORIA ANNOUNCED WINNERS FOR PEOPLE AND NATURE ART AWARD –and their local Queensland Artists
Artists Tamara Kirby (Cooran) and Corrie Wright (Maleny) have won the inaugural ‘Truth in Art Award’ for their work, Wandering Thirst.
Receiving over 100 submissions, the awards challenged artists to interpret the relationship between people, parks and the “inconvenient truth” of climate change, which is affecting the environment and the health and wellbeing of society.

““We are excited about receiving the award. This award allows for the acknowledgment of 'art in the environment' and its importance. For us, the Award reinforces our belief in the capacity of contemporary art to connect with others in different ways. Many thanks to Parks Victoria and everyone involved in the Truth in Art Award, we commend the visionaries in the organisation who understand the impact of art. We are both passionate artists and passionate environmentalists working collaboratively in our own art practices and in the community sector.”

The work 'Wandering Thirst' was supported by The Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Urban Arts Projects.

Yes, it was good to hear more about the project and what you are trying to achieve.
The information you’ve sent is perfect for the moment. Great
We have our engineer here this afternoon and we will see what he can do.
After some discussion here we have some concerns about the structure that may need a left-field solution.
In short, the frame should not be a problem to build and clamp to the caravan. Our main concern is that however that is approached that there will be a very well defined stress region along the bolting line
And that thickness of Perspex is very prone to cracking through there (again, we will review it with the engineer).would 12mm thickness be better? Will talk with Peter from ASAP Plastics to see if he has any thoughts/suggestions about this

For the moment I can see 2 plausible solutions. Please think again!
1. To double the thickness of the sheet. think this option maybe cost prohibited
2. To create a more box-like structure by using 2 sheets joined with a 50-100mm cavity in-between them think this may also be cost prohibited
3. To include a line of supporting compression springs (sketch attached) as a part of the frame that will for the most part keep the caravan upright but allow movement with wave action or strong wind.
The other minor concern is that the ‘raindrops’ that you will be adding (partly that the gluing technique may not being reliable), but mostly that they will add considerable weight that to the structure which will mean even more risk of breakage. My suggested solution to this would be that you may save a lot of time and effort (and possibly even cost) by having the raindrops done as cut-outs on the sheet. This will not only save you the work, and weight of, the glue, resins and the risk of glue failure, but may go a long way to reducing the surface area and therefore the wind load and risk of cracking. We have talked about this option but would really like 3d look (will look into the weight thing)

I am having limited success with Boreen Point data have gone down a few channels, Council, metrology, harbours and marine, EPA & DPI, CSIRO, not having a real lot of success on specifics their all a bit vague. Have some outstanding emails out to local people like the water catchment association etc

BREAK THROUGH spoke with local Paul Willsteed (member of water catchment association) and he guided me to information relevant to the lake on the BOM site (see
below)
Lake Cootharaba/boreen point only experiences one tide a day varying only 5cm
Because of this limited change its reported to have hardly any prevailing currents (this fact was also agreed with locally)
Lake Cootharaba is about 10 kms long and 5 kms wide and is part of the Noosa River system and the Great Sandy Region.

Average depth in the Lake is only 1.2m, you can touch bottom almost anywhere and the deepest bit is probably only just over 2m.-5m in centre. Half a metre
out from shore the lake is no more than 1/2 metre, this is where we will be (will not be able to measure exactly at present because of the recent floods up there
have created higher than normal tides)

Have attached information from BOM site (link below if needed) the closes site is Tewantin but Paul Willsteed reported that Tewantin will have
similar weather data to the Lake

Paul did mention that depending on wind direction there can be some wave action, but thought that the engineer would have a universal rule that could be applied
to calculate windspeed to wave ratio's

We can then get our engineer’s comments. We should be able to turn that around fairly quickly.

We are striving to create a powerful message. We need to raise funds for materials that will enable us to deliver what will be a significant environmental artwork.

We have been working closely with the Noosa Regional Gallery and local businesses, who have offered in- kind support, but what we lack is the financial capacity to manufacture the artwork.

We believe that our region is much, much more than just ‘tourism’. The Sunshine Coast community deserves a diverse, exciting, stimulating informative cultural program. Regional areas often suffer not because they lack innovative approaches, but rather because they are often under resourced and under funded. And this is particularly relevant to our region.
Contributions by others outside the ‘arts sector’ are very important in enabling the delivery of ambitious projects for our region, which in turn builds a healthy contemporary culture.

the work ‘wandering thirst’ Considers the ‘story of water’. There is only one water source for the entire planet. This water follows a cyclic path and the changes of what happens to this water through the cyclic journey affect all of us. Starting in 2008 Tamara Kirby and Corrie Wright were asked to develop a work for Floating Land 2009. They received a RADF grant to concept develop their ideas. The brief for floating land 2009 was to consider ‘water’ and future ramifications of what that might be. Ideas/concepts explored:
site Boreen Point
Water – theme - The Story of Water- the evolution of the cycle of water
Caravan – iconic image that is to connect cycle of water, movement, site and human connection
Automata – moving parts were explored by making postcards, these postcards were made using simple pop-up and automata techniques - references movement of water around the earth – explores interactive components for audience participation
